A new set of tires was long overdue. When the leaves fell on the trails this autumn the riding started to get a little more dangerous, and with snow, even worse. So I bought this new set of tires but before putting them on I decided to go for one last snow ride with the old ones that served me so well.

An hour into our roadtrip to Winnipeg we hit some black ice and slid into the center median. Because it was on a curve the tow truck had to wait for the OPP to come close the road. Before they arrived a snow plow hit the tow truck. Four hours later we carry on – what’s a roadtrip without some adventure.

Snow falls on the steeply sloped roof of the house. Big snow, the kind kids catch twirling about with their tongues out. The hills insulate the home from the wind so even when the weather turns it still drifts slowly down around their little paradise.

Tobogganing, sleigh rides, maple syrup taffees in the snow – it was like post cards and Christmas carols come to life. Things are different now in the slush and wind of the city, 500 miles away from home.

Tunnel Creek was a hub on the course with racers passing through it eight times. Only accessible via a 3 mile hike rising 1700ft, I found myself on it often. Moving deliberately, this distance can be covered in just over an hour but being a Toronto flat lander I was constantly stopped by the scenery extending my time almost double – I was ok with that.

On the last stretch of a 100 mile race your legs burn, feet ache and lungs suck desperately for air; the human body wasn’t meant to run for 30 hrs straight. But with the right motivation on the other side, we can achieve amazing things.
